How to choose parallettes: wood vs steel, height, and what actually matters
Most parallettes buying advice is a list of features. Here is what actually changes how they feel under your hands, and how to pick a pair you will still be using in five years.
The short version
- Wood beats steel for most people on grip comfort and hand feel. Steel wins only if you need a small footprint or plan to leave them outdoors.
- Low parallettes (a few inches tall) are the versatile default. Tall parallettes are a specialist tool for deep pushing range and tuck-to-planche work.
- Grip diameter around 1.25 to 1.5 inches suits most hands. Too thick and long sets tear at your grip.
- Stability is the whole point. A pair that rocks or slides quietly limits every skill you try on them.
Why parallettes at all
Parallettes raise your hands off the floor and put your wrists in a stronger, more neutral position. That single change unlocks a lot: L-sits stop digging into your wrists, planche work gets a range of motion the floor cannot give you, and handstand push-ups gain depth. They are one of the highest-value pieces of equipment in calisthenics precisely because they are simple. There is nothing to break and nothing to adjust. They just have to be stable and comfortable to grip.
Which is why the buying decision comes down to a few things that most product pages gloss over.
1. Wood vs steel
This is the first fork, and for most people it is not close.
Wood
Wooden parallettes are warmer to the touch, kinder to your grip on long sets, and they flex almost imperceptibly, which reads as comfort rather than instability. Quality wooden bars are sanded smooth and take chalk well. The tradeoff is that they are bulkier than steel and should live indoors, since damp warps wood over time.
Steel
Steel parallettes are compact and effectively indestructible, which is why you see them in commercial gyms and left outdoors. The tradeoff is grip: bare steel is cold, slick with sweat, and unforgiving on the hands during static holds. Most people who train on steel end up wrapping the bars anyway, which tells you something.
The honest rule: if you train indoors and care how they feel in your hands, choose wood. Choose steel only if you genuinely need the small footprint, or the pair will live somewhere wood cannot.
2. Low vs tall
Height is the decision people get wrong most often, usually by buying tall when they wanted low.
Low parallettes sit a few inches off the ground. They are the versatile default and the right first pair for almost everyone. They cover L-sits, planche progressions, handstand push-ups, dips, and pike work, and their low center of gravity makes them the more stable option.
Tall parallettes stand higher, giving more clearance for deep pushing range and certain planche entries. They are a specialist upgrade, not a starting point. Taller also means a higher center of gravity, so stability and build quality matter even more.
If you are buying your first pair and you are not sure, buy low. You will use them for more, and you will trust them more.
3. Grip diameter and length
This is the detail that decides whether you enjoy training on them or fight them.
Diameter around 1.25 to 1.5 inches fits most hands. Thinner can feel insubstantial; much thicker forces your grip open and tears your hands on long holds. There is no single perfect number, but that range is where most people are comfortable.
Usable length matters more than total length. You want enough room to shift hand position mid-set without running out of bar, but not so much that the pair becomes unwieldy to store and travel with.
4. Stability, and why it is the whole game
Everything above is in service of one thing: a base you can trust. The moment parallettes rock, slide, or twist, your body stops committing to the position and starts managing the wobble. That ceiling is invisible but real. It is the difference between holding a clean tuck planche and never quite getting there.
Look for a wide, flat base, rubber feet that grip the floor rather than skate on it, and a build with no play in the joints. Weight helps here too. A pair light enough to travel but heavy enough to stay planted is the sweet spot.
One thing to insist on: non-slip feet. Chalk on your hands is useless if the parallettes themselves are sliding out from under you on a smooth floor.
5. A note on weight capacity
You will see big numbers advertised. Treat them with mild skepticism. A weight capacity is only meaningful if the maker actually load-tested the product, and many published figures are marketing rather than measurement. What matters more in practice is honest construction from a maker who will tell you what the bars are made of and how they are built. Solid materials and clean joinery matter more than a large unverified number on a listing.
